Murad III was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1574 until his death in 1595. His reign saw battles with the Habsburgs, exhausting wars with the Safavids, and expanding Ottoman influence on the eastern coast of Africa, while Morocco was briefly made a vassal before regaining independence in 1582; increasing corruption and inflation from New World silver unsettled the Janissaries and commoners. He cultivated relations with Elizabethan England against their common enemy Spain and was a major patron of the arts, commissioning the Siyer-i-Nebi and other illustrated manuscripts.
