Mustafa III was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1757 to 1774, a son of Sultan Ahmed III and his consort Mihrisah Kadin, succeeded by his brother Abdul Hamid I. After years of confinement following his father's deposition he became sultan in 1757, promoting justice, economic reform and modernized infrastructure, and, admiring Frederick the Great, aligned diplomatically with Prussia. His push for war with Russia in 1768 ended in disaster, exposing Ottoman military weakness despite his reforms and costing major territory.
