Empire of Japan

Empires and Imperial States

The Empire of Japan was a historical period spanning 79 years, commencing with the Meiji Restoration on 3 January 1868 and concluding with the ratification of Japan's postwar Constitution on 3 May 1947. During this era, Japan transformed from an isolated feudal state into a modern industrial and imperial power, and the empire encompassed mainland Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Taiwan and other territories at its peak; following Japan's defeat and surrender in the Second World War in 1945, its territory was reduced to its current mainland boundaries, though Okinawa was later restored to Japanese administration in 1972.

FAQs

Why is the end of the Empire of Japan dated 1947 and not 1945?

Because the empire is counted until the postwar constitution was ratified on 3 May 1947, not just until the surrender of September 1945.

The formal surrender of Japan was issued on 2 September 1945, and the empire's overseas territories, including Korea and Taiwan, were lost by then. The Empire of Japan is nevertheless dated as ending with the ratification of the Constitution of Japan on 3 May 1947, because that date marks the end of the imperial constitutional order and the start of the modern state. By this reckoning the empire lasted 79 years, beginning with the Meiji Restoration on 3 January 1868. Okinawa was returned to Japan in 1972.
