Yu the Great, also known as Yu the Engineer, was a legendary sage-king of ancient China credited with the first successful state efforts at flood control and with establishing the Xia dynasty, which inaugurated dynastic rule in China. He figures prominently in the Chinese legend known as Great Yu Controls the Waters, and he and other sage-kings of ancient China were lauded for their virtues and morals by Confucius and other Chinese teachers. He is one of the few Chinese monarchs posthumously honored with the epithet the Great.
