Kingdom of Epirus

Kingdoms and Principalities

The Kingdom of Epirus was an ancient Greek state in what is now northwestern Greece and southern Albania, emerging as a single political unit in 330 BC after the death of Alexander the Molossian and succeeding the earlier Molossian tribal confederation. Ruled by the Aeacid dynasty as a monarchy from 330 to 231 BC, the kingdom reached major Hellenistic power status under King Pyrrhus, who reigned from 297 to 272 BC and fought costly campaigns in Italy that ultimately weakened the state, and after the last member of the royal family, Deidamia II, died in 233 BC the kingdom transformed into a federal state known as the Epirote League. Rome conquered Epirus during the Third Macedonian War, and the region of Molossia fell under Roman control in 167 BC, when an estimated 150,000 of its inhabitants were enslaved.
