Military Leaders and Commanders

Generals, admirals, field commanders and war leaders whose primary historical significance is command in battle or the conduct of a military campaign, whether or not they also held political title. Belongs here: conquerors, campaign commanders, and rebellion or resistance leaders remembered chiefly for personally leading an army, including Indigenous and colonial-era figures whose fame rests on generalship rather than on ruling a recognized polity. Does not belong here: rulers remembered chiefly for governing rather than campaigning, grouped under Monarchs and Rulers or Statesmen and Political Leaders, or leaders of sustained political independence movements remembered chiefly for the movement, grouped under Revolutionaries and Independence Leaders.
