Trung Sisters

The Trung sisters, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi (c. 14-43 CE), were Vietnamese noblewomen who led a rebellion in 40 CE against Chinese Han dynasty rule over the region then known as Jiaozhi, in what is now northern Vietnam. Following the execution of Trung Trac's husband by the Chinese governor, the sisters raised an army, drove out Chinese administrators, and Trung Trac was proclaimed queen, ruling an independent state for roughly three years before a Han counterattack led by the general Ma Yuan crushed the rebellion in 43 CE. According to tradition the sisters died by suicide rather than submit to capture, and they are venerated today as national heroines and enduring symbols of Vietnamese resistance to foreign domination.
