Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong, 1624-1662) was a Ming-loyalist military leader of mixed Chinese and Japanese heritage, born in Japan. He led resistance against the Qing dynasty's conquest of China through the mid-17th century while remaining loyal to the fallen Ming dynasty. His most celebrated achievement was expelling the Dutch from Taiwan in 1662 and establishing the Kingdom of Tungning there. He held the title Prince of Yanping and is remembered as a symbol of Ming loyalism; he died suddenly at age 37, shortly after defeating the Dutch, likely from malaria or heat stroke.
