Honduras

Modern Sovereign Republics

Honduras is a country in Central America bordered by Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest and Nicaragua to the southeast, with coastline on the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca to the south and on the Caribbean Sea via the Gulf of Honduras to the north, covering approximately 112,492 square kilometers. Tegucigalpa is the capital and largest city of a country whose population was estimated at 10,186,738 in 2026, predominantly Mestizo with significant Indigenous, Black and White communities. Honduras was home to major Mesoamerican civilizations, particularly the Maya, before Spanish colonization in the sixteenth century; the country achieved independence in 1821 and has been a republic ever since, though it has consistently endured social strife and political instability. Honduras is a unitary presidential republic, led by President Nasry Asfura following the 2025 election; as of 2022 about 73 percent of the population lived in poverty, with 53 percent in extreme poverty, and the country ranks 138th in the world on the Human Development Index.
