Stephen, often called Stephen of Blois, was King of England from 22 December 1135 until his death in 1154. He also held the title of Count of Boulogne through marriage from 1125 to 1147 and served as Duke of Normandy from 1135 to 1144. His reign was dominated by a prolonged civil war against his cousin, Empress Matilda, over the throne, a period later known as the Anarchy. After Stephen died, Matilda's son Henry II became king and founded the Angevin dynasty.
