A small group of eastern European and crusader era rulers who do not belong under any of this atlas's larger European regional groups: Vlad the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia in what is now Romania, Jadwiga of Poland, the crowned Polish monarch who ruled in her own right in the late fourteenth century, and Melisende, queen of the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, a Latin Christian realm founded by European nobility in the Levant rather than in Europe itself. The three are kept together as the atlas's smallest European monarchs group rather than left ungrouped, since each is a genuine reigning European tradition monarch whose realm is too small in this dataset to justify its own separate first-level or regional group.
