Arnulf of Carinthia

Arnulf of Carinthia was King of East Francia from 887, King of Italy from 894, and Emperor from 896 until his death in 899. Originally Duke of Carinthia, he overthrew his uncle Emperor Charles the Fat to take the East Frankish throne in 887, also ruling Lotharingia and seeking suzerainty over West Francia, Burgundy and Italy. He invaded Italy twice, taking Pavia in 894 and returning in 896 to be crowned emperor in Rome by Pope Formosus, despite rivals Lambert of Italy and Berengar I of Italy contesting his rule; he was the last Carolingian in the male line to rule Italy as both king and emperor.
