Augustus

Also Known As Gaius Octavius · Octavian · Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus
Monarchs and Rulers

Augustus (63 BCE-14 CE), born Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman emperor, ruling from 27 BCE until his death. The grand-nephew and adopted heir of Julius Caesar, he rose to power after Caesar's assassination, first as part of the Second Triumvirate with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, then as sole ruler after defeating Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. He ended a century of civil war and transformed the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire, formally retaining republican institutions while concentrating real power in his own hands under the title Princeps. His reign, remembered as the beginning of the Pax Romana, saw major reforms to the army, the civil administration, and the city of Rome itself, and set the template for the emperors who followed him for centuries.
