Berengar I, usually known as Berengar of Friuli for his rule over the March of Friuli from 874, was King of Italy from 887 and Holy Roman Emperor from 915 until his death in 924. Having risen to prominence under Emperor Charles the Fat, he was elected to replace him in Italy after his 887 deposition; his 36-year reign was contested by no fewer than seven rival claimants to the Italian throne and troubled further by Magyar raids into Western Europe. His death was followed by a 38-year imperial interregnum, ending only when the German king Otto I was crowned emperor in 962.
