Monarchs of England and Britain

English, later British, sovereigns from the Anglo-Saxon kings through the Norman, Plantagenet, Tudor, Stuart, Hanoverian and Windsor lines to the modern constitutional monarchy, together with rival and disputed claimants to the English and Scottish crowns, such as John Balliol and Edward Balliol, whose reigns are recorded here under the same English and British constitutional history. The group covers the whole run from Alfred the Great and Edward the Confessor through the Wars of the Roses, the Reformation, the Civil War and the Glorious Revolution to Elizabeth II and Charles III, plus the earlier Anglo-Saxon and Danish kings of a unified England such as Athelstan, Cnut and Harold Godwinson. A monarch's own reign as sovereign of England, Great Britain or the United Kingdom is the qualifying fact, not any other title, such as Emperor of India, that a later British sovereign also held.
