A confederation of merchant guilds and market towns across northern Europe that dominated Baltic and North Sea trade for roughly four centuries. Its members traded grain, furs, fish, timber, metal, salt and textiles through fortified trading posts, called Kontors, in cities from Novgorod and Bruges to London and Bergen, and won trading privileges by both negotiation and force, including a nine year war with Denmark from 1361 to 1370. The League had no permanent bureaucracy, treaty, standing army or capital; its member cities, led by Lubeck, coordinated through periodic assemblies called Hanseatic Diets. It declined through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries under pressure from centralizing territorial states, the Thirty Years War, and new Atlantic trade routes that bypassed its Baltic and North Sea network.

The last Hanseatic Diet met at Lubeck in 1669 with fewer than ten cities represented, after which the League functioned only as a residual legal association among Lubeck, Hamburg and Bremen; that association was not formally dissolved until 1862.
