Peace of Basel

Peace Treaties and Territorial Settlements

The Peace of Basel refers to three separate peace treaties negotiated in the Swiss city of Basel in 1795 by the French diplomat François de Barthélemy during the French Revolutionary Wars, ending France's conflicts in turn with Prussia on 5 April, Spain on 22 July, and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel on 28 August. Under the Franco-Prussian treaty, Prussia withdrew from the First Coalition and, in a secret clause pending approval by the Imperial Diet, effectively recognized French control of the west bank of the Rhine, while France handed back territory it had seized east of the river. In the Franco-Spanish treaty, Spain ceded the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo to France, though Spain retained the Basque province of Gipuzkoa and would recapture Santo Domingo in 1808 and 1809. Rather than seeking one comprehensive peace, these treaties split France's opponents apart one at a time, and this diplomacy helped Revolutionary France emerge as a major power in Europe.
