The Kingdom of Kebbi was a Hausa kingdom in what is now northwestern Nigeria, established after Kanta Kotal led a successful revolt against the Songhai Empire beginning in 1516, on the western edge of Hausaland. Under Kanta's rule, which lasted until his death in 1556, Kebbi expanded through military conquest to dominate much of Hausaland and collect tribute from its neighbors, but later rulers could not sustain this power, and by the mid-seventeenth century the kingdom had declined sharply, losing its tributary states Gobir and Zamfara to independence in the early eighteenth century. During the Sokoto jihad, forces under Abdullahi dan Fodio captured Kebbi's capital and established the Gwandu Emirate there, but the Kebbawa resisted under their ousted ruler Muhammadu Hodi and then his successor Karari, who founded Argungu as the kingdom's successor state.
