The Kingdom of Zazzau, later renamed Zaria, was one of the seven original Hausa city-states, the Hausa Bakwai, in what is now Kaduna State, Nigeria, founded by at least the mid-sixteenth century and ruled from the capital that came to bear the new name. In the late sixteenth century the kingdom was renamed for Zaria, sister of its warrior queen Amina, and after Amina's death it fell under the influence of the Jukun kingdom, having earlier been a tributary state of the Songhai Empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Fulani forces captured Zazzau during the Fulani jihad of 1805, after which it continued as the Zazzau Emirate under the Sokoto Caliphate until British forces under Frederick Lugard took control in 1901.
