Vandal Kingdom

The Vandal Kingdom, also called the Kingdom of the Vandals and Alans, was a confederation of Vandals and Alans and a barbarian kingdom established under the Vandalic warlord Gaiseric, ruling parts of North Africa and the Mediterranean for 99 years from 435 to 534 AD. In 429 AD roughly 80,000 Vandals crossed from Hispania into North Africa, and by 435 the Western Roman Empire formally recognized Vandal settlement in Numidia and Mauretania; in 439 the Vandals captured Carthage, the most important city in North Africa, establishing it as their capital and extending their control over the Mediterranean islands of Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and Mallorca. Though often remembered for the 455 AD sack of Rome, the Vandal conquest of North Africa dealt a major blow to Roman interests since the region had been a major source of revenue and grain for the city of Rome; the kingdom ultimately fell in 534 AD when Byzantine forces under Belisarius conquered it.
