Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa with coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The Moroccan state traces its origins to the establishment of the Idrisid dynasty by Idris I in 788, and the country is regarded as one of the world's oldest continuously existing states, though its historical territories did not coincide with those of the present day. In 1912 France and Spain established protectorates over the country, and Morocco regained its independence and reunified in 1956 under Sultan Mohammed V.

Start YearThe lead names two real candidate founding points: the Idrisid dynasty's establishment by Idris I in 788, which the source itself uses to call Morocco one of the world's oldest continuously existing states, and the 1956 restoration of independence from French and Spanish protectorate rule under Sultan Mohammed V. Recorded here as 1956, the modern state's own independence date, with 788 named as the source's own much older alternate rather than silently dropped. Classification
