Enzo Traverso's 2016 study (English translation by David Fernbach, Verso, published February 2017) arguing that the two world wars and the interwar years, 1914 to 1945, should be read as a single historical sequence, "the age of the European Civil War," in which conventional interstate war between legitimate adversaries gave way to a war of annihilation between irreducible enemies.
