The Napoleonic era begins roughly with Napoleon Bonaparte's coup d'etat of 18 Brumaire, which overthrew the French Directory on 9 November 1799 and established the French Consulate, and ends with his final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. The period saw Napoleon rise from First Consul to Emperor of the French, remake the map of Europe through conquest and the client states and legal reforms, chiefly the Napoleonic Code, that he imposed on it, and finally fall after the failed invasion of Russia in 1812 and the coalition wars that followed.
