Also Known As The Beautiful Era
The Long Nineteenth Century

The Belle Epoque, French for beautiful era, was a period of French and European history that began after the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 and continued until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. It is remembered, chiefly in retrospect after the devastation of the war that followed it, as a period of optimism, economic prosperity, technological advancement and cultural flourishing across Europe, sitting within the closing decades of the Late Modern Period.
