The Franco-Prussian War, occasionally called the Franco-German War and known in France as the War of 1870, was a conflict between France and the North German Confederation led by Prussia. Lasting from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871, the war was caused primarily by France's determination to reassert its dominant position in continental Europe, a position that had been called into question by Prussia's decisive victory over Austria in 1866. Its immediate cause was the candidacy of a Hohenzollern prince, Leopold, for the vacant Spanish throne, a dispute that the Prussian chancellor Otto von Bismarck inflamed by publishing an altered version of a diplomatic exchange, the Ems Dispatch.
