The Kingdom of Prussia was a German state that existed from 1701 to 1918, taking its name from the historical region of Prussia and ruled from its capital, Berlin, by the House of Hohenzollern. Prussia grew over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries into the dominant power among the German states, and under Otto von Bismarck it led the wars and diplomacy that unified Germany, becoming the leading state within the German Empire proclaimed in 1871. The kingdom itself was abolished in 1918 with the fall of the German monarchy at the end of the First World War.
