Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889 to 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician who led the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and served as Chancellor of Germany from 30 January 1933, when President Paul von Hindenburg appointed him at the urging of former chancellor Franz von Papen and other conservative politicians who believed they could control him. Hitler consolidated power into a dictatorship and ruled as Fuhrer until his suicide in Berlin on 30 April 1945. Germany's invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939 under his leadership marked the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe. Under his direction the Nazi regime carried out the genocide of an estimated six million European Jews, along with millions of other victims including Roma, disabled people, Soviet prisoners of war, political dissidents and others, in what came to be known as the Holocaust.
