Bayezid I, known as Bayezid the Thunderbolt, was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1389 to 1402 and adopted the title Sultan-i Rum. He unsuccessfully besieged Constantinople in 1394 and defeated a crusading army at the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, then conquered and vassalized the whole of Anatolia by subduing the Anatolian beyliks. A renewed siege of Constantinople in 1402 was broken off by the invasion of the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur, who defeated and captured Bayezid at the Battle of Ankara that year; he died in captivity in 1403, triggering the Ottoman Interregnum among his sons.

Who fought on Bayezid I's side when he met Timur at Ankara in 1402?
The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed., on Encyclopedia.com says: Ottoman expansion led to conflict with the conqueror Timur, and the two armies met at Ankara in 1402. Beyazid's troops consisted only of Serbs and the Janissaries, since the Tatars and most of his Turkish vassals had deserted him. His army was routed, and he died as Timur's prisoner.
