Börte

Börte Üjin, born around 1161 into the Onggirat tribe, was the principal wife of Temüjin, who became Genghis Khan and founded the Mongol Empire. She was betrothed to Temüjin in childhood and formally married him in 1178. Soon after, she was abducted by the rival Merkit confederation, and her rescue eight months later became a pivotal episode that helped spur Temüjin's rise to power. As head of the first court of Genghis Khan and Grand Empress of his empire, Börte bore nine children, including four sons whose descendants ruled the major Mongol khanates for generations. She exercised significant political influence during her lifetime, advising on military and diplomatic matters, managing trade routes, controlling territory along the Kherlen River, and arranging the marriages of her daughters to cement political alliances. She died in 1230 and is remembered among the Mongol people as both a trusted advisor and an honored mother figure of the empire.
