Carausius

Monarchs and Rulers

Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius was a Roman military commander of the third century who died around 293 AD. He was a Menapian from Belgic Gaul. In 286, during what is known as the Carausian Revolt, he usurped power and declared himself emperor in Britain and northern Gaul, a realm sometimes called the Imperium Britanniarum. This came only thirteen years after the Gallic Empire had been brought to an end in 273. He held power for seven years and fashioned for himself the name Emperor of the North, until he was assassinated by his finance minister Allectus.
