Chandragupta II, also known as Vikramaditya, ruled the Gupta Empire from 375 to 415 CE, the high point of Gupta territorial power and culture. He expanded the empire westward, defeating the Saka Western Kshatrapas of Malwa, Gujarat and Saurashtra by 409, and established a second capital at Ujjain. His court hosted the Navaratna, nine scholars in the literary arts including the poet Kalidasa, and was visited by the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Faxian, whose account of a prosperous, mildly governed empire is among the most important sources for the period.
