David Lloyd George was a Welsh Liberal statesman who served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922, leading the country through the final years of the First World War. Before the war he had been a driving force behind early twentieth-century social reforms that laid the foundations of the British welfare state. As prime minister he coordinated Allied strategy, played a leading role at the Paris Peace Conference following the armistice, and negotiated the creation of the Irish Free State, before his coalition government collapsed when Conservative partners withdrew their support in 1922.

Lloyd George was a leading participant at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, but the situation in Ireland worsened, erupting into the Irish War of Independence, which lasted until Lloyd George negotiated independence for the Irish Free State in 1921.
