Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy (1869 to 1964) was a Filipino revolutionary and military leader who served as president of the Philippines from 1899 to 1901 and headed the first constitutional republic in Asia. He led Philippine forces against Spain in the Philippine Revolution of 1896 to 1898, took part in the Spanish-American War of 1898, and then fought the United States in the Philippine-American War from 1899 to 1901. He is regarded in the Philippines as the first president of the country during the First Philippine Republic, although that presidency was not widely recognized abroad. He is honored as a national hero and designed the national flag, but he was also implicated in the deaths of the revolutionary Andres Bonifacio and General Antonio Luna, and during the Second World War he collaborated with the Japanese occupation.
