The Interwar Period

Also Known As Interbellum
The Contemporary World

The interwar period ran from the Armistice ending the First World War on 11 November 1918 to the outbreak of the Second World War on 1 September 1939. It saw sweeping social, political, military and economic change: the collapse of the German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian and Ottoman empires and the new states that replaced them, the founding of the League of Nations as an experiment in collective security, the instability and hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic, the Great Depression that began in 1929, and the rise of fascist and authoritarian movements across Europe that led directly into the next war.

FAQs

Did the League of Nations include every major power during the interwar period?

No. The United States never joined and Germany and the Soviet Union were members only for part of the period.

No. The League of Nations never had all the major powers as members at the same time. The United States was debarred from joining because the US Congress failed to ratify the Versailles Treaty by the necessary two-thirds majority in 1920. Germany belonged only from 1926 to 1933 and the Soviet Union from 1934 to 1939, while Japan withdrew in 1933 and Italy in 1937.
