Henry V was King of Germany from 1099 to 1125 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1111 to 1125, the fourth and last ruler of the Salian dynasty. Made co-ruler by his father Henry IV in 1098, he allied with his father's opponents during the Investiture Controversy and forced Henry IV to abdicate in 1105. He ruled in compliance with the imperial princes until 1111, when he captured Pope Paschal II and forced an imperial coronation, after which he reverted to more autocratic Salian rule. Renewed pressure from the imperial princes forced him to compromise with the papacy, and in 1122 he and Pope Callixtus II ended the Investiture Controversy with the Concordat of Worms.

What did the Concordat of Worms change for Emperor Henry V?
The Encyclopedia of World Biography entry on Henry V, reproduced on Encyclopedia.com, says of the Concordat of Worms: By this compromise the Emperor lost effective control over the appointment of churchmen in Italy and Burgundy, while still maintaining a good deal of power over their choice in Germany itself. In all cases churchmen were now to receive the spiritual symbols of their authority, the ring and the staff, directly from the pope.
