Did the pope willingly crown Lambert of Italy as emperor?
Pope Formosus crowned him at Ravenna in 892 but is described as reluctant, and he soon appealed to Arnulf of Carinthia.
Not entirely. Lambert was crowned joint emperor alongside his father, Guy III of Spoleto, on 30 April 892 at Ravenna by a reluctant Pope Formosus. Lambert and his father signed a pact with the pope confirming the Donation of Pepin and later Carolingian gifts to the papacy. Even so, in 893 Formosus sent an embassy to Regensburg asking Arnulf of Carinthia to liberate Italy and come to Rome to be crowned.
