FAQs

Why was Louis the Blind blinded?

He was blinded in 905 by Berengar I as punishment for breaking his oath never to return to Italy.

Louis the Blind was blinded on 21 July 905 as punishment for breaking an oath. After he had been driven out of Italy in 902, he had promised never to return, but in 905 he invaded again at the urging of Italian nobles and took Verona with only a small following. Berengar I came back with Bavarian troops and entered the city at night, and Louis was captured after seeking sanctuary in the church of St Peter. He was forced to give up his Italian royal and imperial crowns, but he went on ruling Provence for more than twenty years.
