George Washington Vanderbilt II, who lived from 14 November 1862 to 6 March 1914, was an American art collector and member of the Vanderbilt family, whose fortune had been built on steamboats, railroads and other business enterprises. He commissioned the construction of Biltmore Estate, a two hundred fifty room mansion in Asheville, North Carolina that became, and remains, the largest privately owned home in the United States.
