John D. Rockefeller was an American businessman and philanthropist who founded Standard Oil in 1870 and built it into the dominant force in American oil refining before its court ordered breakup in 1911. His fortune, at its peak the largest ever accumulated by an American, funded philanthropic institutions including the University of Chicago, the Rockefeller Foundation and Rockefeller University, which shaped the modern practice of large scale organized philanthropy.
