Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who lived from 1922 to 1999, was a Tanzanian politician and anti-colonial activist who led his country to independence and served as its first president, born in Butiama to a Zanaki chief and educated at Makerere College in Uganda and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland before returning home to teach in Tanganyika. In 1954 he founded the Tanganyika African National Union, building a movement for independence explicitly modeled on the non-violent resistance associated with Mahatma Gandhi, and under his leadership the party won overwhelming electoral victories that made Nyerere prime minister when Tanganyika achieved independence in 1961; he became president when the country became a republic the following year. As president from 1964 to 1985 he oversaw the union of Tanganyika with Zanzibar to form Tanzania and maintained the new nation's stability and unity through a period when many neighboring African states experienced serious political instability. His defining ideological contribution was Ujamaa, an African socialist philosophy centered on communal living and national self-reliance, set out in the 1967 Arusha Declaration, which guided the nationalization of banks and major industries while expanding access to education and healthcare, an approach that proved economically difficult but that Nyerere presented as a distinctly African path to development, distinct from both Western capitalism and Soviet-style socialism.
