Kiichiro Toyoda

Business and Economic Figures

Kiichiro Toyoda was a Japanese engineer and businessman who was born on 11 June 1894 and died on 27 March 1952. He was the son of Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of Toyoda Loom Works. His most consequential decision was to turn the family company away from making automatic looms and toward making automobiles. That change of focus created the enterprise that later became Toyota, so that the carmaker traces its origin to his choice to move a textile machinery firm into automobile manufacturing. He is therefore remembered as the person who redirected an established family manufacturing business into the motor industry.
