The Longqing Emperor, personal name Zhu Zaiji, lived from 4 March 1537 to 5 July 1572 and was the 13th emperor of the Ming dynasty of China, reigning from 1567 to 1572. He was known as the Prince of Yu from 1539 until he became emperor, and he succeeded his father, the Jiajing Emperor. He inherited a country in turmoil after years of mismanagement and corruption and worked to restore order, reinstating talented officials who had been exiled and dismissing corrupt officials and Taoist priests who had surrounded his father. He lifted the ban on foreign trade, reorganized the border troops, fortified the seaports of Zhejiang and Fujian against coastal pirates, and repelled the Mongol army of Altan Khan, after which a peace treaty allowed horses to be exchanged for silk again. After this promising start he neglected his duties for personal pleasures.
