Maria I (born 1734) was the first undisputed queen regnant of Portugal, reigning from 1777 until her death in 1816. She married her uncle Peter III and presided over a period of economic growth and architectural projects such as the Palace of Queluz. After the deaths of her husband, her eldest son and her confessor between 1786 and 1788, she developed severe mental illness that left her incapacitated by 1792, and her son John assumed the regency. When Napoleon threatened Portugal in 1807 the royal court fled to Brazil, where she died in 1816 at the age of 81. She is remembered as an admired figure in both Portugal and Brazil.
