Mayer Amschel Rothschild

Mayer Amschel Rothschild was a German banker, born in the Frankfurt Jewish ghetto in 1744, who founded the Rothschild banking dynasty, one of the most influential financial houses in modern European history. He built his early reputation as a dealer in rare coins and gradually expanded into banking, notably managing finances for the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, one of the wealthiest ruling princes in the Holy Roman Empire, which gave him access to capital and connections he used to grow his own firm. His decisive innovation was sending five of his sons to establish linked banking houses across Europe, in Frankfurt, London, Paris, Vienna and Naples, creating one of the first genuinely international banking networks, able to move capital and information between markets faster than most rivals. This network proved especially profitable and influential during the financial upheavals of the Napoleonic Wars era, and by the time of Mayer Amschel Rothschild's death in 1812, the foundations were in place for his sons to build the Rothschild family into one of the most powerful private banking dynasties in nineteenth-century Europe.
