Nzinga, also known as Njinga Ana de Sousa Mbande, was a southwest African paramount ruler who reigned as queen of the Ambundu kingdoms of Ndongo from 1624 to 1663 and Matamba from 1631 to 1663, in what is now northern Angola. Born into the ruling family of Ndongo, her grandfather Ngola Kilombo Kia Kasenda was king of Ndongo, succeeded by her father.
