Pope Anicetus was the bishop of Rome from around 157 until his death in April 168, though the Annuario Pontificio suggests his papacy may have begun as early as 153. He actively opposed Gnosticism and Marcionism, and he welcomed Polycarp of Smyrna to Rome to discuss the dating of Easter.
