Pope Celestine I was the bishop of Rome from 10 September 422 to his death on 27 July 432. His pontificate was largely spent combatting teachings deemed heretical: he was instrumental in the condemnation of Nestorius at the Council of Ephesus, delegating to Cyril of Alexandria the task of condemning Nestorius if he did not recant. He supported the mission that sent Germanus of Auxerre to Britain in 429 to address Pelagianism, and later commissioned Palladius as bishop to the Scots of Ireland and northern Britain.
