Pius I was the bishop of Rome from around 140 until his death around 154 according to the Annuario Pontificio, though other traditions date his reign to 142 or 146 through 157 or 161. He is considered to have opposed both the Valentinians and the Gnostics during his papacy. He is venerated as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church, with a feast day on 11 July, though it is unclear whether he died as a martyr.
