Pope Urban I, also known as Saint Urban, was the bishop of Rome from 222 to 23 May 230. Born in Rome, he succeeded Callixtus I, who had been martyred. For centuries it was believed that Urban I was also martyred, but more recent historical scholarship holds that he died of natural causes.
