Pope Zosimus was the bishop of Rome from 18 March 417 until his death on 26 December 418. He took a decided part in a protracted dispute in Gaul over whether the See of Arles or the See of Vienne held jurisdiction, ruling energetically in favor of Arles without settling the controversy; his fractious temper colored the disputes he took part in across Gaul, Africa and Italy, and at his death the Roman clergy were themselves divided.
